18 Years Of SugarMango
This year, SugarMango turned 18 — and honestly, we still cannot quite believe it.
Eighteen years of colourful rails, new collections, gift wrapping, jewellery cabinets, last-minute birthday presents, “I only popped in for a minute” moments, and so many lovely chats at the counter. What started as a little independent shop has grown into a much-loved women’s boutique in Bournemouth, and that is entirely because of the people who have supported us along the way.
So this blog is really a thank you.
A thank you to every customer who has shopped with us, recommended us, brought a friend in, commented on a post, sent a kind message, popped in for a browse, or chosen us when they could so easily have clicked elsewhere. Independent shops do not survive for 18 years without a community behind them, and we feel very lucky to have ours.
Celebrating 18 Years in Southbourne
SugarMango has always been about more than just clothes.
Yes, we love fashion — the colourful tops, easy dresses, great denim, cosy knits, pretty jewellery, thoughtful gifts and those little pieces that make an outfit feel more “you”. But what we really love is helping people feel good.
Whether you are looking for relaxed women’s fashion in Bournemouth, a present that feels a bit different, a new necklace, a holiday outfit, or just a cheerful wander around an independent boutique in Southbourne, we have always wanted SugarMango to feel welcoming, friendly and easy to shop.
No pressure. No fuss. Just lovely things, honest help and a shop full of colour.
Our 18th Birthday Event
To mark our 18th year, we held a birthday celebration in store, and it was such a lovely day.
We had an amazing day on the 4th July, we celebrated with goodie bags and a special Golden Envelope Hunt, where we hid special prizes around the shop. We also (and I don't know how we managed it) made our own balloon arch for the shop door to welcome everyone in. And it actually stayed up all day! And no birthday would be complete without cake, which is always a favourite with us.
Customers popped in throughout the day, and the atmosphere was exactly what we hoped for: warm, happy, relaxed and full of familiar faces.
It went down so well. We had so many kind comments, lots of smiles, and that brilliant buzz you only get when people are genuinely pleased to support a local independent business.
For us, the best part was not just the sales or the footfall — although both were very much appreciated — but seeing people come together around the shop. Some customers have been with us for years. Others have only recently discovered us. Both mean the world.
A Look Back
There have been so many highlights and changes over the years; I've got greyer. Luckily, the shop got a big glow-up this last year, with a new sign and refit inside. It's amazing how much it's changed, but still keeping its core style at heart: colour, fun and style that makes us happy.
One of my personal highlights was having the shop featured on a local billboard for the Barclaycard Christmas campaign; I still can't believe that happened.

This was how we looked when we first opened. We had mostly jewellery and gifts with a tiny rail of clothes. This has been one of the biggest changes over the years. We've had to really learn about new ways to buy stock, listen to our customers' needs and ever evolve.

Last year, we decided to freshen up our look with a gorgeous modern sign, which led to a revamp inside too!

Our new layout is more fashion focused with lots of scope for outfit inspiration, of course we have maintained amazing gifts and jewellery too.
Why Local Support Matters
Running an independent boutique is joyful, creative and rewarding, but it is also hard work. Every season brings new decisions: what to buy, what customers will love, how to keep things fresh, and how to offer something different from the big chains.
That is why local support matters so much.
Every purchase, every recommendation and every visit helps keep independent shops like ours on the high street. When you shop local in Southbourne, you are not just buying a top, a candle, a necklace or a gift. You are helping keep our high street colourful, personal and full of character.
You are supporting real people, real jobs and real local businesses.
And for that, we are incredibly grateful.
18 Years of Women’s Fashion, Gifts and Jewellery in Bournemouth
Over the years, SugarMango has evolved, but the heart of it has stayed the same.
We still love finding pieces that feel wearable, colourful and a little bit special. We still get excited when new jewellery arrives. We still love helping someone find the perfect gift. And we still believe that a good independent boutique should feel personal — the sort of place where you can ask for advice, have a browse, and leave feeling brighter than when you came in.
For anyone searching for women’s boutiques in Bournemouth, women’s fashion in Bournemouth, gifts in Southbourne, jewellery in Bournemouth, or an independent boutique near Southbourne, we hope SugarMango continues to be a place you are happy to find.
And for our regular customers — thank you for finding us, staying with us, and bringing so many lovely people through the door.
Looking Ahead
Turning 18 feels like a real milestone. It is a moment to look back, but also to look forward.
We have more ideas, more events, more collections and more plans for the year ahead. We want to keep building on the lovely community around SugarMango, keep supporting the Southbourne high street, and keep bringing you colourful fashion, thoughtful gifts and jewellery you will actually wear.
Most of all, we want to keep making the shop feel like SugarMango: friendly, independent, a little bit playful, and full of pieces chosen with care.
So from all of us at SugarMango, thank you.
Thank you for 18 years of support, loyalty, kindness, laughter, conversations, purchases, recommendations and encouragement.
We really would not still be here without you.
Here’s to 18 years of SugarMango — and to everything still to come.
With love,
Alison and the SugarMango team
